When people ask me ‘What’s the best country you’ve been to’ they’re normally shocked to know I’ve never really been anywhere outside Europe. The extent to me leaving Europe so far is Morocco and Egypt!
As a child I went on holiday most years but they were never anywhere crazy and exotic like Florida or Australia. At the moment lot of people my age are all about the long haul destinations and discovering hidden corners of the world, however there are a lot of places within in a few hours of London that are equally amazing.
Since I stopped going on holiday with my parents I’ve found myself saying ‘I really want to go back there’ to a lot of places. As a child it’s fun to go on holiday, but you never really appreciate the places you go. The different cultures, the history and the scenery are not really things you care about as a child, so below is a list of five European destinations I want to discover again…
I went to Sardinia with my family when I was about 14 and it was beautiful. I remember driving all over Costa Smeralda, up and down the coast discovering some of the most amazing beaches. It was April when we went so the weather wasn’t brilliant but every beach we went to had stunningly blue water and soft white sand. I’ve never been to Italy before so this was my first taste of Italian food but I remember every meal being extremely yummy. I’d love to get in a car now and go beach hopping all over again!
I’ve been to Malta a few times in my life but the last time I went I was about 11. My grandparents have had a time share over there for as long as I can remember so we used to go over there with them quite a lot. The hotel we stayed at was in St Julian’s Bay, a town that has change A LOT in the last 10 years. I really want to go back and explore all the places we used to go and the places we were never allowed to go, like the Casino Dragonara! Our hotel overlooked the Colosseum shaped casino and my brother and I always dreamed of going there. Another place I’m desperate to revisit is the lagoons. They look absolutely amazing.
Staying on the subject of family holidays, when I was 13 we went to the Greek island of Rhodes. A lot of people my age probably know of Rhodes because of the popular party destination of Falaraki. However, we went to a little town called Lindos, which just so happens to be one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever been! From what I can remember, the whole town is a maze of restaurants, bars and shops nestled between hundreds of little white apartments. There are lots of donkeys there too! Maybe when I go back I’ll even find the energy to climb to the top of the acropolis hill that overlooks the town.
Although I went to lots of really cool places as a child, there are still places I’ve been in the last few years that I want to go back to. Having never been to Amsterdam or the Netherlands before, we went for a short break in December last year and really enjoyed it. The city itself is so pretty and full of amazing architecture and parks but I would LOVE to see it in the summer. Known for its canals and tulips, I really want to explore the city in full bloom. It looks even prettier than it is in the winter!
I’m cheating a bit with my last destination because Marrakesh is actually in Africa. However it’s only three hours from London and most European travel insurance include it so I thought it would be rude not to mention it! We went to Marrakesh for my birthday a few years ago and I fell in love. It’s like stepping into another world. Although we went for five days and saw so much, there are still lots of things I want to see and do in this magical city. From staying in a little Raid in the Medina to visiting the Palace and Majorelle Gardens, I can’t wait until my next trip to this city.
Which European destinations are your favourites?
Ps. I appreciate none of these pictures are my own however that’s exactly why I’ve written this post- there’s lots of photos that need to be retaken!
